Revolution!

Well, this is maybe me being very French but I am really tired of seeing advertising campaigns using any kind of revolution analogy to promote their new products/services. Most of the time the companies using these kind of metaphors aren’t the most innovative in their sector but use the revolution concept to actually overcome this lack of avant-garde thinking.

There is confusion between revolution and evolution here. Well it isn’t a real confusion but evolution seems to be unsufficient for a commercial purpose. You will be less likely to buy an evolution of an existing product than a ‘revolutionary’ one.

I don’t think this thinking is 100% true, mainly because people fear the new. We may work in an industry where people tend to seek new experiences; however most of the people order the same dish in restaurants… I actually started a series of posts called ‘Why do we fear the new?’ (It remains me I have to post the rest of it!) to actually demonstrate that people aren’t genuinely looking for new and innovative stuff all the time.

I think this is particularly representative of an industry more interested in innovations, trends and short term rather than sense and long term. By the way if you couldn’t make the PSFK event in London , you can now watch the video of the session called ‘turning trends into insights’. The panelists explain nicely the danger of being interested in trends for trends and also make sense of words like trend and insight.

Well to conclude on this one, I let you have a look at a couple of ‘revolutionary’ ads!
