“Fait divers” is a very interesting notion, however I am not sure how to translate it in English! Maybe by something like: ‘news in brief’ regarding media information… This expression has evolved and is now used for any kind of sensational news. It basically means: an event with no historical importance. Most of the time, a ‘fait divers’ is tragic, bloody or gossipy!! Well you may not have any English word for “fait divers” but you invented the Tabloid genre!
The reason I am trying to translate this French expression is the following: I think that the way Sky is organising their information on their website is quite representative of the way media and maybe the society in general are dealing with news… (Have a look at the picture below)

Not that I am not touched with Maddy’s story, but how can you seriously have ‘world news’ ‘politics’… at the same level than ‘Madeleine’ in the left hand nav?
Pierre Bourdieu said some very wise words about the importance of ‘fait divers’ in our society:
“’Fait divers’ are a diversion of information. ‘Fait divers’ have become a basic of information, and have therefore become more and more important. The rarest thing for being well informed is time, if you think that we are using the preciousness of time for vain information on purpose, it means that the most important pieces of information are missing. By filling the rareness of time with emptiness, we disrupt citizen behaviour when they need to use their democratic rights.”

Very true, they are a large part of the distraction from real issues in this country.
